Treat Cupcake Bar makes a variety of cupcakes and frosting that are gluten free, dairy free, egg free soy free and vegan. All gluten free cupcakes are made in a separate area with dedicated gluten free equipment and utensils. Treat does their best to minimize cross-contamination, it’s so nice to see when a restaurant or bakery goes to such great lengths to ensure its gluten free customers can enjoy their food as well without having to worry about getting sick.
*Please note that while Treat uses the best practices to keep gluten free products separated from other cupcakes, they are made in the same facility as other products and there may be a risk of cross-contamination. You can read more on their allergen policy here.
I had the chance to try a few different gluten free flavors at the Gluten Free Expo this past fall. The cupcakes are creative and delicious. They have the same texture that you would expect of a ‘regular’ cupcake. I liked that the mini cupcakes were slightly moist and not too dry. I could not tell a difference in taste at all! And they weren’t too sweet either! The large cupcakes, which I just tried recently were inconsistent in texture; some were moist and some were dry. The frosting had a slightly different texture but tasted great; I couldn’t tell it was dairy free. One of my favorites was the Cookies N’ Cream (pictured below and above). When was the last time you had cookies and cream gluten free anything?
The Pumpkin Pie is also one of my favorite. It is absolutely delicious and a perfect treat for the Fall, although I ate one other day, in the middle of winter, so I guess it’s a perfect treat for anytime of year. The pumpkin pie cake was moist and flavorful, and the cinnamon frosting was not overly sweet, which is how I like it. This was the moistest cupcake I tried, some of the others were on the dryer side.
The chocolate cupcakes were okay; not bad but nothing special. I preferred the “Mochaccino Mocha” frosting over the “Plain Jane” chocolate cupcake with plain chocolate frosting. The chocolate frosting was Plain but the Mocha frosting was a nice touch. I love adding coffee flavor to baked goods.
I’ve never actually visited the shop, I’ve only had them at the expo and at a party, someone brought them. But if you go you can build your own cupcake at the cupcake bar. There is only one gluten free base available, but you can choose from many frosting choices and toppings to add. The cupcakes are fairly large, I’ve never eaten an entire cupcake in one sitting.
There is a second location opening in the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center soon.
