Product Review: Enjoy Life Foods

It’s no secret that I love sweets! I tried my first enjoy life product, a snickerdoodle cookies, a few years ago when I was babysitting for a little boy who has a severe peanut allergy. When the parents got home, I went straight to the grocery and bought a box for myself, no lie!

Have you ever heard of the deal site GlutenFreeSaver? If you haven’t you have to check it out! I love their deals; it gives me the opportunity to try different products. Many of the deals are sample packs, like this one, which means you get to try many different products at the same time. I am always a little skeptical about store-bought cookies, because most of the time they just don’t taste good. Many are too hard, too dry (sometimes even stale-like!), not enough flavor, have a chemical taste to them, or a grainy texture (like sandpaper), and I end up spending money on something I don’t eat, and gluten free products can be expensive! But I knew I loved the snickerdoodle, so I went for this one; a variety pack of 5 different items, reviewed below.

I also love how Enjoy Life’s products are completely safe for a range of food allergies; wheat, dairy, peanuts, soy, tree nuts, egg, fish, shellfish, casein, potato, sesame and sulfites!

Crunchy Vanilla Honey Graham Cookie Good crunch, and not too sweet. The slight taste of vanilla and honey are great with a hint of graham cracker taste. But this was nothing like a graham cracker (if you know a good gluten fee graham cracker, please let me know!). I guess I was expecting a graham cracker and these flavors threw me off. I do like the crunch of the cookie, this is not always easy to find in a gluten free cookie, but it did leave a funny aftertaste in my mouth I wasn’t found of. I did get used it after the first few times I tried the cookies, but I don’t think I’d buy these again. These cookies are super thin, which I found a bit odd and also threw me off a bit.

Double Chocolate Crunchy Cookies – had a wonderful crunchy texture, and definitely live up to their name. The crunchy cookies, I’ve determined, are indeed very crunchy, which I like, but if you prefer a softer cookie you should try the soft baked cookies instead, and they make 7 flavors of those! Back to this cookie…I love chocolate and this cookie was double chocolate! It had a strong chocolate taste due to the mini chocolate chips added in, which were actually a bit soft and melted in my mouth! I would buy these again.

Snickerdoodle Soft Baked Cookies – These are my favorite cookie and I buy them often! These are small, soft, dense and moist. The cookies have a nice texture; moist and chewy. My only complaint is the size; they are tiny! Two cookies are gone in 4 bites max. I think it’s worth it, but I would like to see a bigger cookie!

Chocolate Chip Soft Baked Cookies – small and soft; perfect for a sweet little, emphasis on little, snack. But that’s about it. If you like them you are lucky, if not try the snickerdoodles. The chocolate chip cookie needs a little more flavor, it doesn’t remind me of a chocolate chip cookie, and while you at it, add more chocolate chips please! The texture was ok, again it was soft and it was chewy, but it had a more chemical-like taste.

Cinnamon Raisin Crunch Granola – I was skeptical before trying this, I don’t like sweet granolas, and although I do live cinnamon – in oatmeal, breads, lattes, on roasted butternut squash – I have never liked any granola flavors with Cinnamon in their names. The granola is hard, but not crunchy. It almost have has a soft texture when you bit into it, even though it’s hard on the outside. I don’t know how that works. Not only is the texture a little off-putting, I just didn’t like the taste. Enjoy Life also offers two other flavors of granola; Very Berry Crunch and Double Chocolate Crunch. I don’t think I’ll ever try the berry, like I said before I do not like sweet or fruity granolas. The chocolate could be a good snack food, but I am not a morning sweets person so I probably won’t try this one either

Mountain Mambo Seed & Fruit Mix – When people think gluten-free, nut-free, dairy-free, or any other type of “allergy-free” they tend to shy away and think the product won’t be good. This mix tasted just like any other fruit and seed mix I’ve had. The Mountain Mambo Mix consists of sunflower kernels, roasted hulled pumpkin seeds, raisins, dried apples, chocolate chips and dried cranberries. What’s so different about that? In my opinion it was just ok, I don’t like dried apples, but I do love pumpkin seeds! I did end up giving this one to my dad though, I’m not a big trail mix eater and he is. It also comes in ‘Beach Bash’ (Raw Sunflower Kernels, Pineapple, Roasted Hulled Pumpkin Seeds, Cranberries, Apricots). This is a great on-the-go snack for the car or work.

Cocoa Loco Snack Bars – This should be called a dessert snack bar. Not overly sweet, but very chocolaty. I needed a big glass of milk to wash the little bar down. It is very dense and has a slightly grainy texture. The bards have a chewy and firm texture. I was expecting it to be a bit sweeter, but that would make it an actual dessert. Don’t confuse this with an energy bar or breakfast bar, this is a SNACK bar, for when you are in the mood for a sweet snack. I actually threw the first one I tried away after the first bite. But a few days later, I tried it again and gave it a shot and it wasn’t so bad. Not the best flavored bar out there, I’d prefer a real sweet dessert, but great when you need something just a bit sweet that you can easily store in your purse or work drawer. Again, this bar is small, just like some of the cookies, which is a let down.

I've been on a gluten free diet since January 2009. It's been an adventure, and a challenge at times. I love to go to new restaurants and try new foods, and being gluten free can make eating out difficult at times. But I will not let my dietary restrictions get in my way of finding new restaurants and products. These are my stories of being a young women in a big city, eating out and trying new foods, all while trying to NOT eat gluten. Like I said, it's an adventure and you are welcome to come along... Please note that as I try to eat gluten free 100% of the time, my intolerance is not as severe as others so please use caution when dining at restaurants that are not certified gluten free.
