Zing! Nutritional Bars // Gluten Free & Vegan

What is the real Zing? Zest. Vigor. Vitality. Zing! bars were created by registered dietitian nutritionists who wanted to create something with high quality ingredients that was nutritious, convenient and delicious.

Zing bars offer a better on-the-go choice that provides a smart balance of high quality protein, slow-burn carbs, good fats and dietary fiber. Zing bars are made with good carbs, aka low glycemic for lasting energy. Each bar has 10-15 grams of protein and 4-8 grams of fiber.

Zing bars are not only gluten free but also have NO soy protein, gelatin, corn syrup, artificial sweeteners, sugar alcohols, preservatives, fillers, artificial flavors, additives, trans fat, or dairy!

Zing bars come in 10 flavors to satisfy different tastes. With seven vegan options and three that use whey protein (the “gold standard” for muscle building), Four are coated in organic dark chocolate, four are soft chocolate chip cookie dough flavors and two are fruit and nut butter flavors. For all their differences, they all have a virtually identical balance of smart nutrition. A whole lot of choice in just a few bars!

I recently tried a few different flavors and there was not one I didn’t like! My favorite was the Coconut Cashew Crisp. It has a sweet coconut flavor in a creamy cashew butter base. The pea crisps and organic quinoa provide a wholesome crunch.

I had the dark chocolate as my afternoon snack at work and it kept me energized for the rest of the afternoon (and it satisfied my sweet tooth!). The creamy sunflower butter paired with a refreshing mint taste, covered in rich organic fair trade dark chocolate is sweet and satisfying!

Zing bars can be purchased online or at Whole Foods and health food stores throughout the country. To find a store location nearest you click here

Skinny Kosher Creations Gluten Free Weight Loss/Energy Bars

Screen Shot 2015-04-12 at 6.08.32 PM

Women, in general, are continually wearing many hats a day. Working, parenting, helping family, being a wife or Girlfriend, planning….They try to do it all. Throughout these busy moments on the go we either grab something easy (often junky) or go to the protein bar isle of the store feeling confident that we are choosing a healthier option. The problem is that many of these bars are either rice crispy bars with some flavoring therefore airy and empty or they are chocolate bars remarketed as a protein bar, loaded with unwanted calories, fat, sugar or carbs.

Skinny Kosher Creations offers something different; a low calories bar, made with healthy ingredients, and addresses allergies and dietary restrictions. Skinny Kosher Creations is based out of Woodstock, New York. Owner Brenda and her team have over 12 years of senior management experience within the weight loss industry, combined with their entrepreneurial skills, energy and focus, you have an awesome foundation! Striving to become game-changes in the weight loss/energy bars industry, they have not only made the bars Kosher and gluten free, but also peanut free, dairy free, and lactose free, all wrapped in a mere 130 calories!

The first product they have launched are delicious Energy Bars. The bars are available in three flavors; Choco Chip Coco’Tini, Choco Chip Mint’Tini, and Choco Chip Orange’Tini.

The bar looks dense and therefore most people, including myself, think it is chocolate. The base of the bars are actually dates, which makes the bars higher in fiber and excellent for digestion.

photo 1

I was impressed with the lightness (aka not dense) of the bars and the subtle flavors. I was weary of the orange flavor, because I do not like anything orange-flavored, but to my surprise there was only a faint orange taste, and I really enjoyed the bar. The same can be said with the mint bar, which Jeremy, who hates mint, could actually tolerate the flavor.

Amrita Organic Energy Bars Review & Giveaway // Gluten Free, Soy Free, Vegan

Most energy bars on the market are loaded with preservatives, artificial ingredients, whey and soy protein, both highly acidic foods. Whey is a byproduct of the cheese-making process and has been shown to cause digestion problems. Soy protein isolate has also been shown to adversely affect thyroids, fertility, hormones, and digestion.

And then comes Amrita bars. Launched in 2012, Amrita in sanskrit means means “nectar of the gods.” I was introduced to Amrita at the NYC Vegetarian Food Festival last month, and was excited when they asked me to do a review (and giveaway!) Amrita bars are made from sun-ripened dried fruits, perfectly preserving all their own nectar. Amrita produces protein bars that are raw, organic, non-GMO, and free from the top 8 common allergens (of course gluten free).

Amrita bars are made with raw vegan brown rice protein, which boasts a complete amino acid profile exceptionally high in glutamine, arginine, lysine, leucine, and branched-chain amino acids. Using brown rice protein and dried fruts—such as tropical mangoes, pineapples, and Mejdool dates—together with a rich blend of raw sunflower seeds and sesame seeds would provide essential proteins and fats without the added allergens from nuts, dairy, and soy.

What really separates Amrita from other energy bars on the market, is that each bar is packed full of superfoods, such as chia seeds, maca, or unsweetened coconut, with delicious hints of vanilla and Himalayan Pink salt for taste and flavor balance. All ingredients are rich in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and omega-3s, with a good dose of fiber and heaps of easily digestible protein. Every ingredient is Non-GMO and certified Kosher.

Amrita Bars are available in 6 flavors:

1. Apple Cinnamon – Made with big chunks of dried apples, juicy dates and fresh cinnamon, this bar is delicious and crunchy. They are combined with other organic ingredients that help in balancing the tart sweetness of apples & tangy cinnamon. Loaded with phyto-nutrients and anti-oxidants, apples are continuously being praised as a “miracle food”. They are flexible and make a perfect partner for anything–even with cinnamon! With cinnamon’s warm and sweet flavor, the two make perfect sense to combine with. These two are known for their anti-oxidant properties that help the body protect from deleterious effects of free radicals. Both apple and cinnamon also help in inhibiting the oxidation of LDL or “bad” cholesterol which can help in reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease.

2. Apricot Strawberry – If you’re a fan of Apricot and Strawberry’s sweetness, crunchiness and softness, then these energy bars are all you need! Aside from the big chunks of strawberries and apricots, they are also packed with other organic ingredients making them perfect for your plant-based diet. This delicious blend of summer fruits is loaded with antioxidants, color, and flavor.

Strawberries and apricots are perfect as a pair as they both have a light summer flavor which is refreshing and addicting. I love the sweet taste and juiciness of this flavor. Not only they are delicious, but strawberries and apricots are full of antioxidants, low in fat and rich in fiber. Both are also packed with ample amounts of vitamins and Phyto-nutrients, and are great sources of soluble and insoluble fibers which promote and help in maintaining healthy blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

3. Chocolate Maca – Give in to your chocolate craving and feel no guilt with Amrita’s Chocolate Maca Energy Bar. What’s good about this energy bar is it contains maca and cacao –  both well-known superfoods,  packed with exceptional amounts of vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants and other health-boosting properties. This bar contains 15 grams of easily digestible vegan protein, so not only does it satisfy my sweet tooth, it also provides lots of energy.

Maca is a relative to radish family which has an odor similar to butterscotch. This root is a good source of B-vitamins and a vegetarian-source of B12. It is also rich in bioavailable calcium that is good for remineralization or restoration of minerals in the body. Incan warriors were said to be consuming Maca before battles to boost endurance and stamina. Just like Maca root, Cacao is also a good source for energy. It is considered as one of nature’s miracle, packed with vitamins and anti-oxidants that you can turn into your natural Multi-vitamin. Both Maca and Cacao are good for your heart and can neutralize free radicals in your body. Besides from being good for one’s physical well-being, it is also good for your mental health as both of them are good to balance your mood. They could also alleviate anxiety, stress, depression or mood swings.

4. Cranberry Raisin – Growing up in Massachusetts, we loved eating local cranberries during the fall and holiday months. Now I can enjoy cranberries anytime and anywhere, and all year long, with these Cranberry Raisin bars! Not only are they loaded with cranberries, but it is also mixed with raisin’s candy-liked sweetness, balancing out the tartness of the cranberries. With cranberries acidic taste balanced by raisin’s sweetness, this bar is a match made from heaven.

Cranberries are not only good for the heart but also for the skin and fight against cancer and bacterial infections. A natural brain booster, the antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds of these berries protect brain from age-related memory loss. These berries also prevent formation of plaque to the tooth’s enamel. Raisins (dried grapes) like cranberries are also good source of energy. They don’t only reduce constipation, but also few plant-based products rich in iron, a mineral responsible for the transport of oxygen to the body’s cells.

5. Mango Coconut – The tropical juicy flavor of mango is combined with coconut’s sweetness. These bars will give you a very refreshing and tropical experience packed with other organic ingredients, making them perfect for a plant-based diet.

The king of fruits” as it is called; Mango is so delicious that others forget how healthy they are. Mango is an ancient fruit that turns into yellow-golden in tone when ripe. Eating mango is one of the healthiest decisions you can do for your body as it is packed with vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants. It is rich in Vitamin A, Vitamin E and Selenium, which prevent heart disease and other illnesses like cancer. The fruit has a unique flavour of sweetness mixed with a right touch of tartness perfect for anything even with the coconut’s subtle taste. Coconut is also known its anti-cancer properties just like in mangoes. It is believed to cure any illnesses as it is excellent for one’s immunity. When consume in any various forms, it can still be used as antiviral, antifungal, antibacterial, and even anti-parasitic. This fruit is also known for its wonder for treating mankind’s worst and most resilient of illnesses. Coconuts are not only delicious, but also a good source of fiber, vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. Both mango and coconut have antioxidant property that helps in protecting the body from harmful free radicals. This was my least favorite bar, as it left a funny aftertaste in my mouth.

6. Pineapple Chia – This Pineapple Chia bar is a natural energy-fuelling for your body, perfect in any time of the day that will also remind you the tropical beach. If you can’t get enough of pineapples’ sweet and tart taste then this Pineapple Chia bar is your treat. This bar will not only give you the perfect summer feel, it is also packed with chia seeds, making the whole thing perfect and satisfying.

Pineapples have very sweet and rich flavor in the inside which is loaded with vitamin A and C, fiber, potassium, phosphorous and calcium. They are also low in calories and contain Bromelain, an enzyme that helps in the breakdown of protein in the digestive system. Bromelain has also anti-inflammatory, anti-clotting and anti-cancer properties. Pineapples are known as an excellent source of Vitamin C which is a well-known anti-oxidant. Just like pineapples, chia seed also contains a massive amount of nutrient with very few calories. These tiny super food seeds are packed with protein and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids essential to combat diabetes and also prevent heart disease. Chia seeds are also good for athletes helping them in absorbing water in their body.

Pineapple Coconut Bar

I recently had the opportunity to try the Megaberry and Pineapple Coconut, and I give them both a thumbs up. The Pineapple Coconut Bar has a subtle tropical flavor. I can taste a slight sweetness from the pineapple, and the coconut gives it a smooth texture, while the chia gives a little crunch. I was expecting this bar to be much sweeter than it actually is from the dates, pineapple and honey, and I am VERY happy that it is not as sweet as I though. I do not like anything too sweet. Naturally sweetened with honey, this chewy blend of almonds cashews and chia seeds is packed with protein and fiber.

Pineapple Coconut Nutritional Info

The Nutraplex Megaberry Bar has is definitely sweeter and has stronger flavor profile bursting with berry goodness – seeds and all! Tart flavors of acai berries, cranberries and raspberries combined with luscious fresh strawberries and a chewy blend of blueberries make for a delicious combination. I could barely taste the chia seeds like I could in the pineapple coconut bar. I couldn’t eat this for breakfast (too sweet) but it makes for a great afternoon or post-gym snack.

Megaberry Nutritional Information
Megaberry Nutritional Information

The one thing I don’t like about Nutraplex® bars is that the sugar content is way too high. Each bar has 16-21 grams of sugar per serving. Granted there is zero refined sugar, but it is still more than I like to consume in one day.

You can purchase Nutraplex® bars on their website or on Amazon. It is actually much cheaper to purchase on Amazon and it includes FREE shipping. :)

Pure Bars // Organic, Gluten Free, Vegan

Screen Shot 2015-01-02 at 3.07.29 PM

I was recently introduced to Pure, a line of healthy and nutritious snacks that use simple, wholesome, real ingredients to help make it easier for everyone to live a healthier life.

Founder, Veronica Bosgraaf believes that better eating translates to better living. Pure’s line includes the Ancient Grain bars, Organic fruit + nut bars, and Fruit Snacks/Fruit Sandwiches. As with all Pure products, these delicious bars are certified organic, gluten free, soy free, non-GMO verified, vegan and kosher, and will satisfy your sweet tooth, while providing balanced nutrition for your body.

These aren’t your average wrapped snack bars. Mouth-watering Pure Bars boast ingredients like antioxidant-loaded fruits and heart-healthy nuts. Pure Organic bars use only certified organic ingredients. Pure Bars have between 3-5 grams of fiber and 5-7 grams of protein, making them a wise weapon in the fight against munchies.

Whole ingredients that are full of fiber, protein, antioxidants, and omega-3’s. From outdoor adventures, skiing, hiking, biking and more!, to cramming for brain-straining exams, Pure Bars have the fuel to get you through your day. Pure bars provide, delicious, wholesome ingredients that you can take with you while hitting the slopes or simply commuting to your nine-to-five. A simple little thing like snacking healthier can make you stronger and happier. Everyone needs an extra boost of energy to power through and be at their best, whether they’re tackling something minuscule or epic. Pure has provided that oomph, and all you have to do is eat it.

Organic Ancient Grains Pure Bars

Right away the Ancient Grains Pure Bars captured my attention with their much lower sugar content. As many of you know I avoid refined sugar and try to not to eat anything with more than 8g of sugar per serving. Each bar has just 6 to 8 grams of sugars, but still packs in 5 grams of protein, 2 grams of fiber, and 9 grams of “healthy” fats. It’s so hard to find healthy low sugar bars these days, so it is nice to add another brand to my repertoire.

As for the texture, the Ancient Grains Pure Bars are firm, granola bar-like, and not date-based like the others, making the bars harder and dryer, but still chewy and crispy at the same time. Each bar is made with a blend of quinoa, crispy brown rice, amaranth, flax seeds, and hemp seeds, and they are lightly sweetened with a mix of tapioca syrup, agave nectar, and cane sugar.

Ancient Grains Pure Bars are available in 3 flavors: Peanut Butter Chocolate, Chocolate Chunk Nut, and Triple Berry Nut.

My favorite is the Chocolate Chunk Nut. It is sweet, but not overly sweet, with a generous amount of almond and walnut pieces, giving it a slightly crunchy texture. It’s indulgent but without the extra calories and sugar you would expect from a chocolate flavored bar.

Organic Fruit & Nut Pure Bars

I also tried the Fruit & Nut Bars. Unlike the Ancient Grain Bars, these bars are date-based bars and a bit sweeter with 14-20 grams of sugar per bar. Dates are natural sweet, and the addition of fruit, avage and/or tapioca syrup make them even sweeter. I would be perfectly fine if they removed the extra sweetener.

Nonetheless, I did enjoy these bars as a dessert replacement.

  • Apple Cinnamon
  • Banana Coconut
  • Cashew Coconut
  • Cherry Cashew
  • Cranberry Orange
  • Chocolate Brownie
  • Dark Chocolate Berry
  • Wild Blueberry

The Cashew Coconut was delicious! It was creamy from the cashews and coconut, rich and thoroughly enjoyable.

Unlike some other bars on the market, all Pure Bars are Certified Organic, which means between 95% and 100% of the ingredients are organic. Using organic fruit and nuts means that all the ingredients are free of pesticides and herbicides. Buying organic also keeps the planet cleaner, so your tummy and taste buds aren’t the only beneficiaries.

Although Pure Bars are certified gluten-free, the facility where the bars are processed is not wheat-free, but contamination is virtually impossible given the measure of cleanliness required by organic standards.

You can find Pure Bars at grocery stores and health food stores nationwide, or online. In NYC, you can find them at Oren, Westerly Health Foods, Whole Foods Market, Health Nuts, Trader Joe’s and more than a dozen other locations. To find a retail location near you, click here.

Veronica is releasing her first vegetarian cookbook, Pure Food , on February 17, 2015. We can provide you with some great vegan recipes such as Pesto Tortilla Pizza, Jicama with Roasted Red Pepper Hummus and Dulse, Vegetable Curry, and more. You can pre-order Veronica’s book on Amazon for $14.87. (If the price increases overtime you will be locked into this price.)

Slow Food For Fast Lives // Savory, Not Sweet, Healthy, Gluten Free, & Vegan Food Bars

An innovative, delicious, and nutritious food for people on the go.

Screen Shot 2014-07-13 at 4.34.24 PM

Slow Food For Fast Lives just launched this year and they are super excited about providing good food to people on the go. The founders, three friends who previously founded Banana Republic, Republic of Tea, and Wild Planet, wanted to create a healthy option for people on the go. And they are really excited to be the first ones innovating in this savory snack bar area.

With artisan inspired global recipes, they have created something revolutionary – SLOW FOOD FOR FAST LIVES – a delicious savory bar made with vegetables, nuts, seeds, and gluten free grains with ethnic spices. The first four bars – California, Indian, Moroccan, and Thai – combine power veggies, delicious nuts, and flavorful spices from around the world to give you delicious, healthy, bars that are savory, not sweet.

Screen Shot 2014-07-13 at 4.35.37 PM

The Moroccan Bar was my favorite and slightly sweeter than the other bars, with 9g of sugar vs. the 6g found in the other 3 bars. Chewy bites of carrot, currant, and pistachio with Moroccan flavors— cinnamon, turmeric, ginger and cumin— is not only a delicious combination of flavors, but also boosts your immune system.

The Thai Bar was also delicious. The heat of the chili peppers not only lingered on my tongue, but kicks up metabolism. The savory blend of the red peppers with peanuts, scallions and basil makes it seem like I’m eating Pad Thai. I really couldn’t taste the peanuts. I was expecting an overwhelming peanut taste, which is usually the case with peanut based bars, but I was pleasantly surprised that this one was not like that. I don’t like peanuts.

Screen Shot 2014-07-13 at 4.38.45 PM

This bar is loaded with antioxidants and vitamins A, C, and K and immune boosting, cancer preventing, inflammation reducing, cholesterol lowering, bone strengthening qualities from the red peppers.

Screen Shot 2014-07-13 at 4.40.13 PM

The California Bar has a strong kale flavor. The flavor was not consistent throughout the bar. When I got a bite with pomegranate pieces in it the strong kale taste was toned down, and made the bar much more enjoyable. If you don’t like kale, you will not like this bar. But if you do, this bar has one full serving of kale, says the label, some spinach, and broccoli, quinoa for gluten-free carbs, almonds and chia for the protein, making it a very balanced snack bar. The pomegranate provides you with antioxidants, and the ginger and cinnamon boost your immune system.

Screen Shot 2014-07-13 at 4.40.21 PM

The Indian has a strong cumin taste. Do not eat this for breakfast. Big mistake. But as an afternoon snack it was quite enjoyable, if you like cumin and Indian food. Although my least favorite of all four flavors, the combination of flavors in this bar is really unbelievable.

Each bar is packed full of delicious, real, healthy ingredients. Each bar contains between 1-1.5 servings of fruit and vegetables of the daily suggested 5 servings. With Irresistible flavors and incredible health benefits, there is nothing else like this on the market.

Currently Slow Food bars are available in retail locations in AZ, TX, CA, NV, OR, GA and several other states, but haven’t made it out east yet. So for now can purchase a case of 12 Slow Food bars for $29.99 and for a little less on Amazon (and free shipping).

  • 100% natural, real food ingredients
  • No artificial colors or flavors
  • Certified gluten free
  • 2-3 grams of fiber and 4-5 grams of protein per bar

What I don’t like about SOYJOY®:

  • 11-12 grams of sugar per bar
  • size (wish it was just a little bit bigger so I could enjoy it longer)

Every SOYJOY® bar is baked with high-quality, non-genetically modified ground (non-GMO) whole soy—retaining all of soy’s naturally-occurring nutrients. SOYJOY® is made from ground whole soybeans to take full advantage of all of the nutritional benefits of whole soybeans. SOYJOY® does NOT contain soy protein concentrates, isolated soy protein, or any other highly processed soy ingredients. Each bar contains 8 grams of whole soy.

SOYJOY® bars are a nice change of pace from the candy-like or granola-type snack bars that are so prevalent in the snack bar market.  If you are looking for something that is a little different and also a low calorie treat, this is a pretty good option. With 11-12 grams of sugar, more than I am accustomed to in my diet, SOYJOY® bars make a great dessert replacement or afternoon snack.

You can find SOYJOY® bars at retail locations throughout the US including Stop & Shop and Kmart’s in the Boston area. Or you can purchase SOYJOY® bars on Amazon for as little as $0.98 per bar!
